FM stereo broadcasting and RDS (Radio Data System) are advanced features that transform a basic FM signal into a rich multimedia experience. How FM Stereo Broadcasting Works

FM stereo broadcasting uses a multiplex system that encodes left (L) and right (R) audio channels into a composite baseband signal. The system generates three components: a mono-compatible sum signal (L+R) from 30Hz-15kHz, a difference signal (L-R) amplitude-modulated onto a 38kHz suppressed subcarrier, and a 19kHz pilot tone at 8-10% modulation. The 19kHz pilot tone allows the receiver to regenerate the 38kHz subcarrier and decode the stereo signal, achieving channel separation greater than 60dB. Key RDS features include: Program Service (PS) which displays the station name (up to 8 characters) on the receiver screen; Program Type (PTY) identifying the format (News, Rock, Classical, etc.); Radio Text (RT) for scrolling messages, song titles, or contact info (up to 64 characters); Traffic Program (TP) and Traffic Announcement (TA) flags for traffic information services; Clock Time (CT) for automatic receiver time synchronization; and Alternative Frequency (AF) allowing seamless switching between transmitters on a network.
