FM Antenna Selection Guide: Choosing the Right Antenna for Your Broadcast
Selecting the right FM broadcast antenna is critical for maximizing your transmitter's coverage and ensuring reliable signal delivery. The antenna converts the RF power from your transmitter into electromagnetic waves that propagate through space to your listeners' receivers. This guide helps you choose the optimal antenna for your FM broadcasting needs.
Types of FM Broadcast Antennas
- Dipole Antenna: The most common type for FM broadcasting. The Elecsky DP-1000 uses a 1/2 wave dipole design with vertical polarization and omnidirectional radiation pattern, providing 2dB gain at 98MHz.
- Ground Plane Antenna: Similar to dipole but with ground plane elements for improved impedance matching. Good all-around performer for FM broadcasting.
- Yagi Antenna: Directional antenna with higher gain. Ideal when you need to focus signal in a specific direction rather than omnidirectional coverage.
- Circularly Polarized Antenna: Radiates both vertical and horizontal polarization. Better for mobile reception (car radios) but more complex and expensive.
- Panel Antenna: Used in multi-bay configurations for high-power professional broadcast stations. Provides directional or cardioid patterns.
Key Antenna Specifications
When selecting an FM antenna, consider these critical parameters:
- Frequency Range: Must cover 87.5–108MHz. The DP-1000 is optimized for the full FM broadcast band.
- Power Handling: Must exceed your transmitter's output. The DP-1000 handles up to 1000W, compatible with all FMT5.0 models up to FMT5.0-1000H.
- VSWR: Lower is better. The DP-1000 achieves VSWR <1.35:1 at the design frequency.

Installation Best Practices
Mount the antenna as high as possible—every meter of additional height can extend coverage by hundreds of meters. Use quality 1/2" corrugated coaxial cable (available from Elecsky in 20m–50m lengths) to minimize signal loss. Weatherproof all outdoor connections with self-amalgamating tape. The DP-1000's removable elements make it easy to transport and install—simply loosen two bolts to remove ground plane elements and unscrew the radiator.
Antenna Tuning
After installation, use the PM-1B RF Power Meter to check VSWR. If VSWR is above 1.5:1, adjust the antenna's radiator length (typically by loosening the top section and extending/retracting) until the lowest VSWR is achieved at your operating frequency. The DP-1000's omnidirectional pattern ensures uniform coverage in all horizontal directions when properly tuned.
Multi-Antenna Systems
For extended coverage, consider stacking multiple antennas using an FM power splitter. A 2-bay dipole array provides approximately 3dB additional gain, effectively doubling your radiated power. For 4-bay systems, a 4-way splitter distributes the signal to four antennas with excellent amplitude balance. Multi-antenna systems require careful phasing and are recommended for professional broadcast installations.
Lightning Protection
